If you are in your 40s or 50s, there is a good chance you have already started saving for retirement in one form or another.
You may have paid into pensions through a number of employers. You may have savings elsewhere too. And you may feel, quite reasonably, that you have been doing the right sort of things over the years.
But there is a big difference between having pensions and understanding what they may actually mean for your future.
This is the gap we see most often.
Join us for The Pension Reality Check
A free evening event to help you understand where you stand, what your pensions could mean in retirement, and what you can do next.
The problem is not always a lack of saving
In many cases, it is a lack of clarity.
People have built up several pension pots over time, but they don’t have a clear picture of where they all are, what they add up to, or what sort of income they may eventually provide.
Others have one main pension and are paying into it regularly, but still have no real sense of whether it is on track for the retirement they want.
And many simply don’t know what “enough” actually looks like.
That uncertainty can be surprisingly hard to deal with, because it leaves people stuck between two uncomfortable thoughts. They suspect they should be paying more attention, but they are not sure where to start.
This is where people can begin to drift
In our experience, the biggest risk is not about making a bad decision.
It’s drift.
- Drift can look like having three or four old pension pots and never quite getting round to bringing them together.
- It can look like checking the value once in a while, but not knowing what that figure may really mean in retirement.
- And it can look like assuming you’re probably somewhere in the right ballpark, without ever knowing what sort of number you are actually aiming for.
That is where people can lose confidence and, over time, lose control.
Most people don’t know their number
One of the most common questions people have is also one of the hardest to answer on your own:
How much do I actually need to retire comfortably?
Not just to get by. But to enjoy life. To have choices. To take holidays, pursue hobbies, help family if you want to, and still feel financially secure.
That is where retirement planning often becomes more real.
A pension pot is just a number on a page until you understand what kind of income it may need to produce, and whether that lines up with the sort of retirement you want.
For some people, the gap is smaller than they feared. For others, there may be more to do. But either way, it is far better to understand that now than leave it until it could be too late.
Retirement itself brings decisions
Another area people often avoid is what actually happens when retirement starts to come into view.
At that point, the questions change.
- When can you access your pension?
- How much can you take tax free?
- Should you draw an income, take lump sums, or do something more structured?
- What if you have different types of pensions with different features?
- How do you make sure your money lasts?
These are important decisions, and they are much easier to make well when you understand them in advance rather than under pressure.
That is why we are running this event
On Wednesday 10th June, we will be holding a free evening event at Squerryes in Westerham called The Pension Reality Check.
It is designed for people who have built up pension savings over the years, know they should probably be paying more attention, but are not fully sure where they stand.
During the evening, we will look at:
- how to understand what your pensions and savings could mean in retirement
- what sort of numbers may be needed for the lifestyle you want
- what choices people face as retirement approaches
- what practical steps you can take now to improve your position
You will hear from David Braithwaite, Richard Harris and Karen Gorbutt, and there will also be a panel Q&A with the opportunity to ask questions, followed by drinks and bowl food.
This event is for people who simply want more clarity than they have now. Because once you understand where you stand, it becomes much easier to decide what to do next.
