How much will you actually need to retire comfortably?
It sounds like a straightforward question. In reality, it can be surprisingly difficult to answer.
You might have several pensions accumulated over the years. You may know roughly what they’re worth, but not what level of income they could provide. Perhaps retirement still feels a long way off, or suddenly much closer than it used to.
These were some of the questions behind our first Pension Reality Check event earlier this year. Following the amazing response we received, we’re bringing it back on Tuesday 20 October, this time at Kingdom in Penshurst.
It’s about more than knowing what your pension is worth
Seeing a pension value on a statement is one thing. Understanding what that could mean for your life in retirement is quite another.
Is £200,000 enough? What about £300,000, £400,000 or £500,000?
There isn’t one figure that works for everybody because retirement looks different for everyone. The income you need will depend on the life you want to lead, when you hope to retire, the other assets and income you have and how long your money may need to last.
That’s why we think it’s useful to turn the question around.
Instead of simply asking “How much is my pension worth?”, perhaps the better question is:
“Am I on track for the retirement I want?”
What will we cover?
David Braithwaite, Karen Gorbutt and Richard Harris will look at some of the questions many people in their 40s and 50s are beginning to ask, including:
- how to get a clearer picture of the pensions you already have
- what your pension savings could mean in terms of retirement income
- the role of the State Pension
- the choices available when you eventually come to access your pension
- why the age at which you hope to retire matters
- how starting to plan earlier can give you more options.
The aim isn’t to tell you what your retirement should look like. It’s to help you understand where you are now and the questions worth asking while there is still time to make a difference.
