Scam Watch: How to Stay One Step Ahead of Online Fraudsters

At Citrus Financial, protecting our clients’ financial wellbeing means more than just good advice. It also means keeping you informed and safe from evolving cyber threats.

A recent article in The Guardian highlighted just how vulnerable our online accounts can be, especially in light of the ever-increasing number of cyber-attacks. Even trusted organisations like the BBC, Marks & Spencer and Boots have fallen victim in recent years.

So what can you do to protect yourself and your financial information?

1. Use Strong, Unique Passwords

Many people still use the same password across multiple websites, often something easy to guess.

To reduce your risk:

  • Avoid personal info like names or birthdays.
  • Use a long password with a mix of letters, numbers and symbols.
  • Never reuse passwords across accounts.

Pro tip: A password manager can safely store and generate passwords for you, so you only have to remember one.

2. Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

Think of 2FA as a second lock on your front door.

Even if a hacker has your password, they still need a temporary code (usually sent to your phone or email). This simple step adds a powerful extra layer of protection to your bank, email and financial apps.

3. Watch Out for Phishing Scams

Phishing emails and texts pretend to be from well-known companies and trick you into clicking dodgy links or sharing personal details.

Spot a scam if:

  • It creates panic or urgency (“Your account will be locked!”)
  • The sender’s email address looks odd.
  • The grammar or layout seems sloppy.

Top tip: Don’t click links. Go directly to the company’s website if you’re unsure.

4. Think Twice About What You Share Online

It’s easy to reveal security clues without realising. Your pet’s name, school photos, or anniversary posts can help criminals guess your passwords or security questions.

Keep social media privacy settings high and stay cautious about what you post.

5. Keep Your Devices Updated

Those pesky software updates? They’re your frontline defence.

Whether it’s your phone, tablet or laptop, keeping your operating systems and apps updated helps protect you from known vulnerabilities.

A Safer Way to Work With Citrus Financial

To give you extra peace of mind, we’ve launched a secure client portal.

Instead of sending documentation using email, the portal offers a safe space to:

  • Share and receive confidential documents securely.
  • Sign paperwork electronically.
  • Stay in control of your financial information.

It’s easy to use, secure, and designed with your privacy in mind. If you’re not set up yet, your adviser will be happy to help.
