Getting to Know: Jenny Brockman

Calm, practical and quietly determined, Jenny Brockman brings a thoughtful and down-to-earth approach to financial planning. After gaining her financial advice qualifications in 2021, she joined Citrus in 2023 and now works closely with clients to help them make sense of their money and plan confidently for the future.

She lives the full country life — husband, daughter, dogs, geese, ducks, chickens and all — and brings that same grounded energy to the advice she gives.

What first made you consider a career in financial advice?

I actually fell into the industry by accident. I started in a client services role at a financial advice firm, and at that stage I didn’t really know what a financial adviser did. But after a few months of watching how advisers worked with clients, I began to find it really interesting. I did some research into the qualifications, realised it was something I could achieve, and once I started learning more about it, I never looked back.

"Building relationships. For me it’s not just about numbers — it’s about getting to know people..."

What do you enjoy most about working with clients?

Building relationships. For me it’s not just about numbers, it’s about getting to know people, understanding what they want to achieve, and helping them get there. A lot of clients start by saying things like “I don’t really know what I’ve got” or “I don’t know if I can ever retire”, and being able to work with them over time and show them what’s possible is really rewarding.

How would you describe your approach as an adviser?

I like to take a thorough and clear approach. Financial advice can feel overwhelming at first, so I break everything down and make it as easy to understand as possible. I always check in with clients during meetings to make sure they’re following everything, and I never rush decisions. It’s important to me that clients understand everything and feel completely confident before moving forward.

Some people can feel overwhelmed talking about money. How do you make people feel at ease?

Keeping everything simple! It’s my job to make things as simple as possible. There can be a lot to cover when giving financial advice — pensions, tax, investments, protection, savings — and it can feel like too much if it’s all thrown at you at once. When there’s more than one priority, we tackle things step by step. A clear plan makes everything feel manageable and achievable.

“Seeing clients achieve something they didn’t think was possible.”

What do you find most rewarding about your role?

Seeing clients achieve something they didn’t think was possible. Retirement planning is a great example. I’ve sat down with clients who thought they had years to go, and once we looked at their pension planning properly, we realised they could retire much sooner than expected. That moment of realisation really makes all the work worth it.

What’s one thing you wish more people understood about managing their money?

That financial education should start earlier. I really believe basic personal finance should be taught in schools. Things like tax, pensions, allowances and saving. A lot of people enter work without any understanding of these things, and that can hold them back.

You’re a mum, are there money topics you think parents especially should know about?

Definitely! When I returned to work after having my daughter Molly, I looked into childcare support and was shocked by how many people don’t know what they’re entitled to.

There are government schemes like the Tax-Free Childcare account that can really help, but so many families miss out simply because they’re unaware. Making better use of allowances can make a huge difference, especially for parents.

“The team, without question. Citrus has a really supportive culture, everyone helps each other and shares ideas.”

What do you think makes Citrus Financial different?

The team, without question. Citrus has a really supportive culture, everyone helps each other and shares ideas. I also think it’s important that we have female advisers in the team, we actually outnumber the male advisers. Financial advice has traditionally been very male dominated, so it’s great to be part of a firm that encourages balance. And as a parent, I really value that Citrus supports families and work-life balance.

How do you stay up to date in a changing financial world?

Continuous learning. As advisers, we’re required to log annual training (CPD), and we’re regularly updated by Quilter Financial Planning whenever regulations change. I also attend investment updates and seminars with fund managers. Plus, all our advisers meet every Monday morning to discuss the week ahead and share ideas and advice on any unusual cases we might be working on. It means we’re always learning from each other and keeping our knowledge current.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?

Being outdoors! I’ve always loved country life and I spend a lot of time outside with Molly and our animals. We’ve got dogs, geese, ducks and chickens, so there’s always something to do. It’s a lively home but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Life sounds busy, how do you find balance?

I won’t pretend it’s easy! I’m busy at work and at home, and now I’ve signed up to run the London Marathon as well. But I actually enjoy being busy. For me it’s all about routine and organisation. I’ve also learned not to stress about what I can’t control. You just have to go with it.

Tell us something clients might be surprised to learn about you.

I play stoolball. Most people outside of Kent haven’t heard of it! It’s somewhere between cricket and rounders, and I play for my local village team. It’s a proper league, we play twice a week in the summer and have end-of-season tournaments, although every game does finish with a trip to the pub. My mum still plays too, so it’s become a bit of a family tradition, I’m sure I’ll get Molly into it.
